You buy oil for ambient temp reasons. If it's hot out, you run thick oil like 20w50. If it is cold out, you run 5w30.

Oil can be 30 years old sitting on a shelf or fresh out of a jiffy lube gun. Don't feed into the ads and all that BS.

Bad information about oil is all over the place.

Read and understand viscosity before you decide (over the advice of the engineers that built your motor) to switch to something line 20W50.

I won't get into the oil argument but you should understand what running molasses in your motor means on a cold start. You are trying to help the motor when hot but killing it on each cold start. The idea that "thicker" is better doesn't hold water.

IMO 20W50 is yesterdays news and I would never run it in a bike of mine.

If you want to debate the oil thing, take into account that most modern turbo motors, that can run very hot run 0W40. Think about that and when you understand what the zero means you'll have a better understanding of whats bad and whats good.

I used to run 20w50. Had all kinds of valve train noise. Had this mysterious "knocking" in the engine when hot. Engine itself seemed to heat up faster.

I switched back to 10w40, ALL of that stuff stopped! I will never put 20w50 in my bike ever again. Maybe if I buy an old air cooled something or other, I'll think on it, but this bike....nope. I've even tossed around 0w oil for a bit now, seeing as a few here have sang a few praises on it.

10w40 is bout as "thick" as you really want to go, imo....
