Clutch Friction Plate Notch

I'm replacing my clutch for the first time on my 03. I've noticed there is a half circle notch cut out of two tabs on every friction plate. Do these have a function or are they part of the manufacturing process?

the frictions dont have to line up or anything like that, put them in however. just make sure you dont put the steels in backwards

Thanks! I didn't think those notches did anything. Really has me puzzled why they have them. By backwards you mean the sharp edge versus the smooth edge. When I pulled them out the sharp edge was facing out.

yes, the smooth edge goes in so as the clutch is locking in(you letting the lever out) the steels cant catch on the hub. if the sharp edge was in, it could bind and gouge the hub and cause it to slip. they really should be smooth on both sides, but only need to be smooth on one side.
