Okay I was trying to figure a way to up grade the 2003 9Rs forks. it occurred to me that it may be possible to swap forks with the '04 12R.
my thinking is that the benefits would be USD forks and Radial brakes. \
1.Questions are what is the Diameter of the Disks?
2. are the calipers 2 or 3 pot?
3. what is the rim and tire size?
4. what is the fork diameter?
can the ZX12 triple tree be adapted? and if so how would this affect the rake and trail?
5. what is the weight difference between the two? not terribly important but use full to know none the less.
do you think such a swap would be an up grade or a down grade, and why?
I am gonna upgrade my forks this winter. As per 'abadassbikerlad's' recomendations. Traxxion components.
I'll lead him over to this post..he can fill you in more....
7r dosn't have Radial brakes. Also disk size is smaller.
Biggest advantages I see would be less unsprung weight, more ridged, and radial brakes. Thought about 10r but the disks are smaller and the I'll bet the legs are shorter. also the weight deference between the bikes.
If I can find a cheap set I've convinced myself to get them But I'm looking for the easiest way to mount them. and what complications my come up. There are other usd forks out there but I'm looking for the one that fits the best and gives the most improvement. true radial brakes of a comparable size are a muss.
Ok I was browsing e-bay looking at available forks to swap out. There are a lot of GSXR1000 forks out there. got me thinking Radial brakes, Not sure if it has 320mm rotors though. also might be slightly shorter?
couple of 10r forks, but 10r i'm sure is shorter and has smaller rotors.
Any body think that the Gixxer fork might be a good option?
are they 46mm maybe you could use you triple tree with the gsxr front (forks brakes rotors rim)even if its shorter thats fine it would be made for less travel
using the same triple tree would be a big bonus 8) . But even if they are listed as the same diameter wouldn't the usd be larger around because the outer female leg is on top? I know that if the front is lower I would turn in faster but how much shorter do I dare go? also brings up ground clearance issues? I'd be really exited if they would fit the ZX9 tree.
I have zx10r forks on my 2001 zx9r. The length of the forks are very similar to the original zx9r forks. The only problem is that the zx10r clip-ons make the handlebars about 1 1/2 inches lower. I just ordered some lsl 1 inch rise clip-ons that should fix this so there are no clearance issues with the fairings. The zx10r is a lighter bike but when comparing the parts the zx10r parts look stronger so the forks should be up to the task. I think zx12r forks would just be overkill heavy. zx12r and zx10r forks are inverted so using the zx9r triple clamps is out of the question. I used zx10r triple clamps with a zx9r steering stem and bearings. I made a custom bushing for the top of the steering stem to fit with the top triple clamp. Lower triple clamp fit perfectly with the steering stem.
The zx10r rotors are similar in diameter to the 98-2001 zx9r rotors but the 2002-2003 zx9r rotors are bigger. zx12r rotors look huge so I know the zx12r forks and brakes will not work with a zx9r front wheel. I am not sure about the spacing between the rotors. I just used zx10r wheels so I would not have to work out any of those issues.
zx9rpilot
Can you post some pics of your bike with the 10R forks and clip-on installed? Would really like to see how she looks. Buy the way, how much did it cost you to do this mod? How does the bike feel/steer with the 10R forks?
Cost of zx10r wheels, rotors, front calipers, clipons, triple clamps, front fender, forks and front brake master cylinder was about $1100. Steers ok. I have not taken it out for a good ride yet and there are like no turns in Oklahoma. I plan to take it to Arkasas this weekend to test it out. My other zx9r that I ride every day has worn out brakes and suspension with a frame that is bent about 2 degrees so comparing it to that bike might not be best. The zx10r brakes feel so smooth. I already bought a 05 636 front master cylinder which is said to make a big improvement. I will put that on when I get some stainless steel brake lines. I have a ohlins rear shock I just put on also so all the suspension settings will need work. I will have to have someone test ride it who knows how to do that stuff.
9pilot that is an awsome bike. Thats the setup I was orignaly thinking of.
My concerns with the setup were zx9 weighs more than 10r, so had concerns about the forks ability to cope( probably pointless I only weight 140-145). also down grading the brake diameter. I am also interested in what mods were made to fit the 10r rear, it looks like you are running a 2002 swing arm? very nice setup.
I fit the rear wheel by using the zx10r axle and aluminum blocks that the axle goes through. The zx9r and zx10r axle diameter is not the same so the axle loads ara held by the blocks only, not the swingarm. The zx10r axle was a little short so I trimmed the thicker aluminum block by about 1/4 of an inch and the smaller one that the head of the axle fits into I trimmed about 1/8 of an inch. I have a 1/4 inch wide spacer on the left side of the wheel. I think I have a 1/8 inch think washer on the right side. I put some small washers on the caliper bracket to move the caliper over to the left a bit. Without the nut tightened on the axle there is a 3/16 gap between the spacers so I thighten the nut enough to compress the swingarm that 3/16 of an inch. It works but it is not a perfect setup. The wheel is still about 1/4 of an inch to the right of centerline and the rear sprocket is about 1/8 of an inch to the left of the front sprocket. I have not taken off the front sprocket to see how hard it would be to move it out a little.
I have not done anything for steering stops yet. Right now with the zx10r clipons the stops are the brake lever hitting the headlight (Not good at all) and the clutch adjustment wheel hitting the gauges.
I wish I had known about the 954 clipons. They look like just the thing the bike needs. Anyone need some lsl clipons?
The zx9r does weight more stock than a stock zx10r however I am lighter than the average rider with a lighter than stock zx9r.
I just got back from a ride to Arkansas with about 800 miles put on the bike. The front end needs a lot of work. I know nothing about suspension settings and neither did any of the other riders I went with. There were sections of the highway than had groves in the concrete every 15 feet or so that caused the bike to shake terribly. I can look down at the front fender when I ride an I can barely tell the fender is moving when I hit a bump and that is with the softest setting. Suggestions? There is no theoretical reason it should handle badly once the settings are worked out. I base this on the fact that my 99 zx9r handles just fine even though it has 60,000 miles, a bent frame, a right fork that has leaked fluid for the last 15,000 miles and a right fork that has the original fluid. I have never adjusted the settings even once on that thing.
You did some cool mods zx9rpilot. With that nice rear shock you put on, maybe it'd be worth the money to send the forks out to Traxxion or Race Tech and have them set them up for you?
Since you bought the forks off ebay, I guess you don't know what the previous owner did to them. (Huge spacers on top of the springs?, stiffer springs?, thick oil?...)
Winter's coming, so it may be worthwhile to have some pros disassemble, see what's in there and change parts or set them up just for your weight.
I think 04 but could be 05. Does it make a big difference? Front end still feels bumpy on some roads. I had some friends of mine help set the preload. I am considering sending the forks out to Race Tech.
I have found I was able to put on a zx9r sprocket on the zx10r wheel so that helps. I put in on backwards to that the teeth are a little closer to the wheel to help with chain alignment.
