petcock question

I lost the black knob that fits on the petcock and replaced with a different year. I've now run out of gas for the second time!! I don't usually use the trip meter because I am use to having to switch to reserve, then filling the tank. Does anyone have a PIC or description of the exact location that the black petcock knob should be on for "run?" I ran out of gas last month and made sure I set the knob opposite of where it was. Last night, in that new position, I ran out of gas again. What gives?? There's only 3 setting on that knob, RUN, RESERVE, and OFF!! My question is, "Where the heck is RUN??

Yeah I ran out of gas twice. 1st time I didn't switch back to ON from reserve when I filled up. The second time I was on the ON position an ran the tank bone dry. There is a plastic pipe with a screen that stick up about 4 inches above the bottom of the tank. This is the fuel suction for the "ON" position. Once you switch to the "RES" it sucks fuel from the bottom of the tank. Well on mine the pipe came out and was just floating around in the tank. So now the "ON" sucked at the same level as the RES at the bottom of the tank. So I have no reserve. So I removed the tank, removed the petcock assembly from the tank and shook the tank around until I could get the pipe out the tank with needle nose pliers. It was easier to get the pipe out of the hole where the petcock attaches rather than the fuel filler hole. Trust me on this one!!!!!!!

Part number 51023 is what I'm talking about.

Just curious if anyone has been able to instal a feul level indicator on their machine? seems like everone could benefit from that.
Rather idiotic that I must slosh the tank in order to gauge how much fuel is left prior to each ride.

I figured out exactly how to do that using a ZX-12 dash and sending unit and making my own patch cable between the 9R wiring harness and the ZX-12 dash. My only problem is that I cannot locate who is the vender Kawasaki used so that I can get the correct female 16 pin and 20 pin male connectors for the patch cable I'd need to make.

The vendor for the plugs is AMP
Not according to the amp folks I've talked to (several different times). We looked and looked through their catalogs called them and came up with zero. If you know what there part numbers are as well as the right pins, I'm all ears!

As a Honda car tech, I'm dealing with connectors all the time. It's amazing how many different pin shapes there are, that on first look appear the same.
That being said, I have been able to use Honda car pins and insert them into the Kaw. gang connector. Maybe you could rummage through some old H. harnesses at your "friendly" local Honda dealer, or wrecker.
There are harness repair kits from Honda that we use. That's where I got mine.
