Cush Drive bearing problem, wheel seperating

I have an 04 ZX6R with 15,000 miles on it, I bought it with 14,000 miles on it and rode it for a bit and the chain was getting bad so I put a new x-ring chain and both sprockets on it. I adjusted the chain per the specs and after a short ride it got really tight. I re-adjusted it back to spec and was good for a couple hundred miles until the cush drive bearing blew apart and the cush drive slid out of the wheel and the sprocket bolts rubbed on the swingarm. This happened a few miles from home and nursed it back to the garage. The chain was super loose at this time. I ordered an all-balls bearing kit and installed them tonight, put everything together and adjusted chain correctly. Well after another short ride, the chain got really tight again so I headed back home. The bearing went out again and the cush drive came out of the wheel even further and rubbed a good groove into the swing arm.

What could be causing this? I had the rear tire aligned correctly. It is getting very frustrating and expensive and have a feeling it is going to happen again after replacing the bearing again.

It sounds like you may have left out or lost the spacer between the cush drive bearing and the wheel bearing, allowing the axle to put tremendous side thrust on the cush drive bearing. Consult a repair manual or parts diagram for proper procedure.

Would the spacer between the cush bearing the wheel bearing be #42036 in the attached picture? When I took it apart the first time, there was no spacer between those two bearings. There is the long spacer between the two wheel bearings though.

Thanks for your help!

I second Tazio: missing spacer/dust seal.

Yes, 42036 is the part. Otherwise, you will destroy the cush bearing, due to side loading. I forgot to install one once, and it seized to the axle from heat.
