Suggestions for a quieter muffler?

Hello all.

I have an '06 ZX-14 that I bought back in '09. It had several performance mod's when I bought it. Among them was a Tsukigi exhaust.

Lately I've been putting a lot of miles on this bike, and the Tsukigi muffler is starting to annoy me. It is loud, and I mean LOUD! Sounds like ten thousand angry hornets on crack in an empty oil drum. This presents some problems for me.

• On long rides, the noise really kicks the sh*t out of me. Seems like the muffler outlet has a direct path to my ears.

• Every cop within a 2 mile radius can hear this thing coming. Seriously - 2 miles.

• I have to shift the bike into 4th gear when I get near home, or I'll wake up the entire neighborhood.

So I'd like to replace the muffler. I definitely don't want to replace both the pipes and the muffler if I can help it. This mainly because of cost.

Anyone have any suggestions for a replacement muffler??

Thanks for the replies.

The silencers can't be repacked or modified. In order to do anything like that, I'd have to drill out all the rivets, disassemble the canister, and then reassemble and re-rivet the canister. That would be a nightmare.

The problem is that this muffler was designed to be this loud.

Try Delkevice 450mm Oval Stainless Steel Silencer to fit ZZR1400 (2006-2008) - See more at: Delkevic UK | Stainless | Motorcycle Silencers | Exhaust Systems. I looks quite similar to the system you have today. I have used it for years. It's pretty quiet, and has a deep pleasant tone. The system is very cheap, but the quality of the steel is good. You find these system on Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More | eBay and www.delkevice.co.uk.

Um, yeah they can. Akrapovic's are similarly constructed and are repacked doing exactly as you describe, the kit comes with SS rivets, it's not that bad.

In addition an aftermarket dB killer in each canister (1 or 2, can't tell) will knock down the noise as well.
