A1 stick coils ?

I have looked into some new stick coils ,genuine ones are £100 + each ... so can i test my ones before i look at just buying a new set ?
How long do the coils last just a approx milege or years ? my bikes done 30,000 mils and is 17 years old now !!

my12 runs real strong , just had it tweaked on the dyno , it was at 155 bhp ,he spent 40 mins got it running 179 bhp and 95 ft/lbs ,,,, still running rich ,so i need to check fuel pressure after fitting a new walbro pump , but i have noticed it runs lots better when i put new plugs in ,twice in the last 6 months i have changed the plugs ,so i know for defo this is the case , which i think could be coils ?

what do you lads think ,,,,, / ?

I would think with 179 bhp the stick coils are ok. But you can find a how to check them here zx-9r.net ? View topic - Sensors, Cam, Pick up and spark plug Coil Checks. for the zx12 A the secondary windings are 9.2 to 13.8 KOhms.

For Tech Questions Bike Model letters are more useful than saying the year, for uk owners anyway, as registration year is not always year of manufacturer model.

Thanks for the info ,,, i had a quick read through , did not know that about the slightly bigger oil filter , i think i am using standard size ? will check tomorrow ,,,, i will check all my coils as well .

i think ,just because you have good numbers on a dyno , that when riding in real time ,things can still not be 100 % , ?

if you have messed with the fuel system since the dyno tune, you likely need a new dyno tune. especially if youre fouling plugs...

at the last dyno , the chap said my fuel pressure was all over the place -60 in places , so i done some re-routing of hoses and fitted a new walbro pump ,also checked stick coils ,cleaned and put new plugs in while i was there , so thursday just gone, i took it back to him ,and he said it is still rich but got it set up preety good !! but he said sometimes by putting new plugs in it may run good for a while ,but if you have a failing stick coil it will come back ??

The bike is running really well ,almost to the piont of going back to a 18 front cog from 17 !! it just lifts so fast in 1st and 2 nd it is quite a handful , so i think i better check the coils before i source some new ones ??

Should i use original kwak ones or source some after market ones ?? thanks for info and help ...

the NA 12 that I drove to 226mph was owned by forum member CMG. 1427cc, cnc head, monster cams, bored tbs etc etc(250ish hp). the engine was developed by a guy that goes by entropy on several boards. his focus was mainly the engine. when Henry got the bike he completely redid it from the ground up and gave the engine a freshen up and staying with the known strong engine combo. we had a lot of ideas that seemed to work well and it was a lot of fun to drive. the 226 run was done into a 4mph head wind, so im confident its a 230+ mph ride in better conditions. the bike is currently waiting for some attention to come back and see if my theory holds true. too many things on the go and not enough time or money.
