finally i need help.........

ok so it was nice out today and a friend and I took a blast, there was a stretch and I opened her up to about 150 and once I came back down to idle speeds she was making a fluttering sound, at idle she seems like not all cylinders are running but if I rev her and get going she seems normal until im back down to low rpms. if I let her idle she seems like shes running on 2 or 3 and every so often it seems like she gets spark to the down cylinder and the idle will raise and seem normal,, where should I look first? was thinking maybe the pc3usb maybe took a shit, and will unplug her and see what I get, never had a problem like this and am calling on the boys to throw ideas my way......

Hi Wylde:

Great question, you're encouraging me to dig in. Here's what I found. In chapter two section 33, there is a worksheet. It has a list of the problems which you pick most closely resembles your situation. Then you move next to the problem chart . Using the situation you identified on the worksheet the problem chart gives you a breakdown of what specifically to look at, in what order, and the chapter that covers that subject. On my manual the worksheet and the problem chart show up on pages 79 and 80. An example: rough idle (problem), then on the problem chart you'll find idle stability. Under idle stability you'll find a letter that most closely resembles your situation. This letter gives you the sequence on what to check with references to the chapter that provides that info.

will a spark plug throw an intermittent spark? the whole ride she was flawless until I opened her up the one time, now there is an issue with not idling on all 4 , but will kick in full power when I give her a lot of throttle,, and when idling every so often you will hear the dead cylinder kick in and fire then drop off again into a limp dead barely idle..

was leaning toward a plug getting overdosed on a 150 mph run. guess that will be a start point. thanx CMG!
it was just odd how the first 20 minutes of the ride were perfectly fine until I laid into her to blow some cobwebs out that it happened..

I would not think the plug would cut in and out like that . My money is on a coil pack breaking down .

is there a easy way to tell the difference between a plug and a coil pack issue.

Garage
You could use an infrared heat gun and see which headers are colder and then move that stick coil to another cylinder to see if the fault moves with it.

For Tech Questions Bike Model letters are more useful than saying the year, for uk owners anyway, as registration year is not always year of manufacturer model.

Hmmm confusing update.
so I put it back on the tender when I got home last night. this afternoon I went down and tried to start her with the enricher engaged, it took longer than normal. finally started and let it run for about 30-40 seconds and then crawled under to feel each header pipe, all 4 were hot to the touch, so now with that being said, where would the next logical step be? can it be a coil stick firing intermittently? how often do these things go out? any input is appreciated. thanx guys

There is a procedure in the manual to check the coil sticks with a multimeter very easy .

But I think there's nothing wrong with your coil sticks and there's probably nothing wrong with your spark plugs. I think dirty. I think current is grounding with heat and vibration.
But while you have a coil sticks out you might as well replace the plugs. Use 9s. Make sure the spark plugs are tightened sufficiently
Don't forget the dielectric grease.
