So i finished up the job today. Oil pan gasket came in around noon. Some pictures of my findings. Started with draining the oil from the drain plug. Oil came out used and dark but very clean as far as no debri or anything that shouldnt have been there. First picture shows oil on my hand with a glove on. I moved my hand around the bucket i drained the oil into, couldnt find anything that shouldnt have been there.

Next i took the filter off. Didnt end up having any tools to cut it open properly so i left it alone. Dropped the pan, initially looked good. Until i poured out the remaining oil and noticed some metal sitting in the very bottom of the pan. Wasnt much, second picture shows what i initially saw in the bottom of the pan. Last picture is of a few pieces i took out with my finger from the bottom of the pan. Overall not as much as i was expecting. Im not sure what to make of it. The shavings arent magnetic, so i dont know where they came from.

I put everything back together, new gasket, oil and filter. Started the bike up, noise doesnt seem to be as loud, i mean it was faint before to start with. I took the bike for a few small rides today, maybe not the best idea as i never cleared up any issues. But it ran good, had no problems, no noises that made me not want to ride the bike. Anymore opinions anyone?

If we had a clutch let loose, yes, sounds like, looks like; clutch residual from a previous whatever happened. With that said, I see no brass or copper material that has the fingerprints of a bearing insert letting go.

Go on your ride. Hope that IS clutchuck on your end or AAA is in the cards for a tow home.

Glad everything came out clean. Over the years, many people have found definitive solutions here for many problems. This is one of the few for which there really hasn't been a definitive solution. I remember an instance awhile back where a rider found some internal damage which made noise. I think it was to the starter drive. As Beans said, it was a consequence of an exploded clutch, but I don't know if any of the others who reported this noise also had clutch explosions. Ride it.......

I rode the bike about 65 miles yesterday after the oil change and everything seemed good. Bike rode smooth. Mostly back roads and a few miles highway. I figure ill ride it for now and if anything happens or any noises develop ill tear it down. A previous clutch issue could very well be those pieces in the pan. It had a whole new setup put in before i got it, billet basket and whatnot.

still there

got bike back today, jobs done as mentioned earlier. knocking noise is still there. the oil that came out was completely clean. does anyone think having the throttle bodies checked will help? or loosening bolts for cam chain tensioner and giving it a tap? im worried about something letting go at high speed, is this likely?

Ive ridden mine about 150 miles since the oil change, still runs great. Mostly back roads riding but some highway with a quick sprint to 150mph with no issues. I still cant help but worry something is still wrong but maybe im being paranoid and it was previous clutch debri. Ive been wanting to have my throttle bodies synced as im sure it hasnt been done in some time if ever. The cam chain bolt tap is woeth a shot as its the easiest and quickest thing you can do.

my noise is a knock though, not a chain noise. how does this tap of tensioner help with a knocking noise?

The tensioner tap will eliminate noise from that area, but it did not solve the one discussed here. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sticking with TB sync for now, but some crazy shit is going on in my world so the bike has been back-burnered for now. Someday maybe this season or next I may get to sync them TB's up and see if that don't fix it, but it could just be one of them noises that comes with the design...

Over the years, several people have reported this noise, but no one has ever posted about engine failure after hearing this noise.....
