Gas tank mod

Have searched for this subject with no luck so here goes. Has anyone done the mod to the gas cap neck where you either 'cut' or drill a hole to increase the tanks capacity? I met a GSX1400 owner today who showed me this mod where he cut a hole in the filler neck using a sharpened screwdriver. If I see him tomorrow I will take a photo and post on this thread. The result was 3 more litres of fuel and 100km extra range from the tank. Any thoughts on this for the 12?

Both of those bikes have completely different tanks than a 12....the 12's tank is mostly under your butt....

You could do this if you wanted, but there's no way you'll pull that much more fuel outta that tank. Maybe 2 or 3 cups...

The air space is there for a purpose...to allow for expansion of the liquid...this, imo, is a foolish mod for a bike and on most bikes, unless you have a great seal on your gas cap, will lead to a lot of messed up paint jobs....

I tend to agree with you, his tank neck was deeper than the 12 and he also said that you have to ride straight away before the gas overflows onto the ground. Funny thing was his son who had an SV1000S had done the same mod and they both swore by it. Think I'll be leaving mine alone! Thanks for the opinion.

Ha! I did the same search as I used to own an 1150GS. A very common mod for that bike but I couldn't find anything for the 12. Cheers.

if you have ever had the gas tank off the bike to actually inspect it, you would see that this is totally impossible. theres no room thats not already being used

Stick a litre of fuel in the tail section....infact you could get 2 litres in easily.

Ok...so it's half under your butt...the other half is in front of your crotch and belly..

I think we all know what I meant....or anyone who has had the shell off.

Interesting. This is the first I've ever heard of a 'TARDIS' fuel tank (bigger on the inside than it is on the outside)......

If your going to do this extreme idea
think along the Idea of Mauser and this mod.
with an Under tray and the tool box removed there is a big space under the seat if you Made a fuel Box the right shape and some how them run it up through a breather pipe ?
maybe a Elec pump ? as long as the new fuel tank under the seat had a breather pipe I may work.

changing the Tank its self I NOT a good Idea at all like said the tank is made to take heat changes and the sencond skin may also be to provent it punchering in an crash pissing out petrol all over your HOT bike,
One think come to mine

FIRE

I think it a lot of work just to get 20 / 30 miles more before filling.
