hello to all, I am a newbie here and just recently bought a 03 12R. I was wondering if anyone else had the issue of only being able to start the bike in neutral with the clutch out. whrn I pull the clutch the bike will not kick over. I think this is a dangerous thing if the bike stalls while riding and I have to put it in neutral to start again Thanks |

there must be a problem with the switch mate

think the side stand and neutral are all wired to work together so check the side stand switch the neutral switch and the clutch switch as one is dirty or faulty id say check all relevant wiring too with a multimeter (you need one of them for checks and there only £5-£10)

you can eliminate the sidestand switch being stuck in with gunk... because if it was stuck IN the bike would think the stand was DOWN and it would cut out the minute you put her in gear !

The zx12 works slightly differently but this is what I'd check first if I was you. The clutch switch. How to here, remember the switch on the zx12 only works with the clutch lever pulled in, so forget the other checks in the how to. zx-9r.net :: View topic - Clutch switch checking, cleaning and/or replacing.

songohan12rAlso try to make sure by switching off your bike while in motion and switch it back on then pop the clutch, in same gear (high gear, like 3rd or 4th or 5th or 6th, depending on how fast you are going) to see if it will start, I am sure it will......that way if your bike every stall while riding don't have to worry about using your start switch or going through gear to neutral to start it again ![]() Are there any ZX12R clubs or groups in Japan (do you belong to any?)? Do you still see many ZX12R's there in Japan? Last edited by bldragon; 11-06-2010 at 06:25 AM.

Thanks, all for the advise will get to work checking the switches tomorrow, there are not many 12R's where I'm at only seen four including mine and my buddy, that's why we got them everyone has a GSXer or a Kawasaki Z type. But in the main land there are quite a few

Here's what I posted 8 years ago,: Hold the clutch handle in. Take a flat tip screwdriver and depress the the button on the starter lockout switch (it is located on the bottom side of the clutch lever), now slide the screwdriver off the button and it will snap back out. I did this maybe five times. This usually fixes the issue. No real need to take the switch apart. The screws that hold the switch together are very soft.

Had the same problem when I first bought mine. It was a 5 min fix pull the switch off spray it with contact cleaner re-install. Works great. Good luck.

I looked at both my bikes while home, because neither of mine function like they should. They both only start in neutral, clutch lever released. If I pull in the lever, neutral or in gear, the starter doesn't turn. Which is odd, since that seems to say the switch is working, but in reverse? The kickstand switches operate correctly tho.

![]() The clutch switch, kickstand switch (& the neutral indicator) are a perennial conundrum... ![]() Their relationship seems like it should be pretty simple, but it's fakkin' not... We all have each had our "learning experiences" with them... ![]() ![]() Wish I could explain it, but it's one of those things... Last edited by GO 200; 11-09-2010 at 06:42 PM.
