Dino's rear seat hinge

I just recieved and installed Dino's rear seat hinge. This is definatly one of the best mods a person can do to the ZX12R! This question is for those of you that have installed this hinge. What have you done for a helmet lock? I really did not have a problem cutting off the stock lock, but I would like to figure out a way to have a lock without having something sticking out like a sore thumb.

Thanks for the help!

Not sure what you mean? the stock helmet locks on the 12 are cables they dont stick out like a sore thumb even when your using them and when your not they cant be seen maybe you didnt know or who ever owned your bike before removed them but there attached under the seat where you now bolt the dino hinge so get yourself some cable make 2 loops like the stock one but maybe a bit longer i made mine about twice as long because the ones it had where kinda short maybe someone can help out and post a pic of the helmet lock cable for u to see

I have had my bike for a while before I installed the seat hinge. I know how the stock helmet lock works and have used the lock quite a bit, as I always wear a helmet when I ride. As the people who have installed Dino's rear seat hinge know, and per the instructions that come from Dino, the hooks that the ends of the cables slide over are cut off so the bracket for the hinge can be bolted on. I was just wondering what other people have done for a helmet lock after they cut off the hooks.

I always wear my helmet when I ride my bike too and always carry my helmet with me everywhere I go, I never use helmet lock so I will not miss it. Also I wonder why folks like to lock their $400 helmets to their bikes where someone can easily cut the strap and take it, plus where I live its hot and I do not want to wear a helmet that is in the sun for a long time.

Ummm, because the helmet would be largely worthless to the thief with a cut strap. Presumably most everyone (though not all I suppose) that would be looking to steal a helmet knows this.

This is an informative thread though, as I've wanted a Dino hinge ever since I got my 12 last year. I wasn't aware that the "hooks" needed to be cut off to fit the hinge. I still want one, but it's good to know that.

Either way I don't want to take a chance of someone cutting the strap and stealing my helmet and not keen on leaving it in the Sun after paying so much money. Plus if your helmet is something very cool looking someone will steal it so they have it (kids), or if they really want to they can replace the strap....play it safe I rather not shell out another $400 for replacement helmet.

[shrugs] I don't pay that much for any helmets and I'm not much on wild graphics, so they aren't as big of eye candy attractions I suppose. What's more, I don't want to carry my helmet around with me anytime I stop somewhere - especially if it's an extended stop. Imagine riding your bike to some event/game/festival/rally/etc. and having to carry your helmet around all day - that would suck.

And as far as I know, helmet straps can NOT be replaced/repaired.

Back on topic, I've seen where there are helmet locks for around $20 that can be mounted somewhere a bike's frame, but I don't know of any good spot for such a lock on a 12R. Those sorts of locks are really more for bikes with conventional tube frames and such. Perhaps one could be mounted to the rear subframe near the left passenger peg mount.

I've seen other locks that replace the handlebar ends, but those don't really thrill me from a security standpoint.

I hear you on carrying your helmet around to some event/game/festival/rally/etc, that is why if you do you carry it with helmet backpack or just don't ride your bike there....but like you said since you don't pay too much for your helmet and don't have graphic where you get some punks looking to steal then helmet lock is just the thing for you.

So you know anything is possible, not supposed to replace or repair but one can be repaired since its only a nylon strap.

There are many helmet locks out there, I am sure one will work well for you, good luck!

that looks pretty easy to unbolt. Kinda makes your helmets a buffet item.

I saw that too, kind of weak on their part using those bolts and nuts....if I use this product I would definitely change those bolts and nuts with rivets (industrial strength) where one will have to drill them out to try to detach it.

Thanks Bldragon. I've seen some setups like that before. Pretty slick for what they are. As for security, I believe the bolt heads are a "security" type of allen that has a small stud in the middle of the head - you have to have a special wrench to fit the heads of those bolts. Not inpenetrable, but not as easy as a simple bolt/nut setup either.

Unfortunately, a setup like this won't work for my 12R. I've got an undertail & hugger and made my own plate mount that is a bit recessed (compared to stock). The mount wouldn't be strong enough for that kind of stress, nor is there really clearance for a helmet (let alone two). I appreciate the suggestion just the same though.

Hmmm. I'm only going from the pictures you posted, but could you move the bracket so that it mounts to the bottom side of the bike's subframe (where you cut off the helmet hanger tabs)? That would effectively lower everything, though perhaps too much. I can't really see all that well if there's clearance to try that or not. Just a suggestion though.

Or, better yet, give up on it and sell it to me for the tidy sum of oh say $25. :D

In my experience, the seat cowl can be moved/adjusted a bit... A washer under the mounting tab in front might pull it down slightly on the seat itself... (I'm presuming you want to have the gap around the cowl equidistant from the tail surface...)

My seat cowl will slide a bit fore & aft (I don't have screws in it), & that will adjust the gap... I can also move it side to side about .100", making the gap greater & lesser on opposing sides...

Hope that's what you're talking about...

There is no way to move the bracket as you'd mentioned....however I can somehow bend both sides of mounting areas (where the helmet hanger tabs were), there is a mention of some sort in the instruction sheet to adjust the seat, I will try that.

Since all the tabs are plastic I am not too keen on messing with them...I already broke one tab a while back.....but thanks for your suggestion
