:( Frame Slider Crash Report

Well had the frame sliders on for a couple of years now and finaly got round to testing them....sorry it's taken so long.

Happened at a roundabout (don't know if you have those in America), I was entering it at the 6'oclock position, nipped in behind a Range Rover that was going around. I was heading to exit at the 3 oclock position (going past 9 oclock and 12 oclock) . Its quite a small tight roundabut and I was straight and upright at the 9 oclock position and was just tipping it to the right to go through 10,11,and 12 oclock when the Range Rover slammed on his brakes. I had space and time so no dramas at this point but when I touched the front brake it instantly locked. With the lean and weight already being transfered to the right the front tucked and she went straight down, I got a foot down but couldn't hold it up. I was doing about 15mph - 20mph at the time, I guess it was a combination of damp road and residue diesel.

So how did the frame slider do. Not as well as I'd hoped but the bikes definately better than if it hadn't been on there. I recently replaced the front stalk indicaters with flush but the indicator still got scuffed. Mirror scuffed, the front winglet obviously got scrapped but unfortunately so did the front and side fairings across the point where they join, top edge also scraped. Bar end and brake lever got scuffed and then the leading edge of the Exhaust can. Where the old mushroom sliders bolt on also got a slight nick but I think it would have been worse if they were on there. Engine caseing is untouched though.

For comparison I have been down on the right hand side before without this slider at about 25mph on an black ice. Front fairing had to be replaced, side faring was cracked and repaired ( mushroom slider folded backwards and went through the fairing, front winglet cracked the side fairing, side engine casing cracked holed and replaced, exhaust can holed and replaced.

I'll post a picture up tonight if I can otherwise tomorrow morning.

Are you replacing it all yourself or going through the insurance? If doing it yourself, I've got my old stock can kicking about you can have.

Just for the record I list my interests as women, shark fishing, cage fighting, boxing, alligator wrestling and teasing bears by tickling their paws when they're asleep, Grrrr.

Cheers but nothings broken, its all repairable. A few more days and I'd have been able to find out what speed I was actually doing when I replayed it at home on the PC

Rider error dosn't come into the combination? Glad to hear your OK, as the bike is repairable. But I always think its best if you blame your self for every accident, and learn from your mistakes rather then pointing the finger at something in the road, visible or not.

I know what you mean, at the end of the day I'm the guy at the controls so I'm responsible. But when you look back at an incident and think 'how could I have avoided that' on both occasions I don't think it was possible. This wasn't a question of space, speed or panic braking, no heart in mouth moment when the Range Rover braked, I was quite relaxed but instead of getting the expected fork compression and quick stop I got a combination of instant full right lock and tuck. I've walked around on a diesel covered wet road at the scene of an accident and it was a job to stand up.

I had exactly the same thing happen a few weeks back on a dead straight piece of country road that I absolutely KNEW was covered in diesel because the rain had made it mulicouloured. When the car infront braked I had plenty of time and space, even slowed with engine braking before braking but just touching the brakes for the final pull up made the front lock and tuck, on that occasion I just got my foot down and held it up. That time I was lucky this time I wasn't.

Where I work now is quite a large industrial estate and it also has dockyards for shipping so its a concentration point for lorries and vans and diesel spills. Its a problem.

Could have been worse (and before anyone says anything I actually wash it every weekend, this happened on a Friday ).

The slight pitting in the front edge of the cover is where Laurel and Hardy stole it a few years back (before the frame slider was on), the generator cover also got a dent in it. They managed to drop the bike three times also snapping off both footpegs in the process.

The side fairings been cracked, repaired and resprayed twice sofar. I don't know wether to send it off to be done, have a go myself or get one of those Hong Kong fairing sets off eBay. Hmmmm.

Hi sorry to hear of your off - there is a whole load of 12 plastics just appeared on Ebay - I think they are for your model year. I also know of a good sprayer of panels in Newhaven.

I really liked those sliders, but they seem a little unsufficient alone.
