Big bore kits

I am looking around and pricing big bore kits lately and wondering has anyone used the ape stuff and if so, what was the result in hp. I have seen several kits out there, 1270, 1394 etc. What is available that is a fair deal, and would work as a good nitrous combo. I dont want to split the cases really, so replacing pistons, cylinder and headwork, then custom mapping with bmcs, pc, yosh with say 80-90 nos shot. what kit is recommended. It will be used at track but on street as well.

BIG BORE

TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, YOU DON'T REALLY GAIN A LOT OF HP FROM A BIG BORE. YOU DO GAIN LARGE AMOUNTS OF TORQUE......I MEAN LARGE AMOUNTS. THE MAJOR DOWN SIDE IS THE FACT THEY RUN SO DAMN HOT AFTER THE KIT. I LOVE MINE BUT IF I HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER I'D HAVE GONE STROKER INSTEAD.

Hey Doc, we're both in the same boat. I'm getting bored of the 40 shot too!

Here's the deal. 1 mm, 2 mm or 3 mm you should be alright but the bigger the shot, the better idea it is to maintain cylinder integrity...meaning the meat between the cylinders.

If you wanna go big shot like that you could put in some lower compression pistons (like I'm thinking about), stock displacement so if you do mess up you can always rebore, and safely put in a 100 shot assuming proper fuel delivery.

I thought about going w/a big motor like (stroking as well as boring) but you can't wind up the motors that high and....with nitrous...well....you get the idea....1270 would be good if you really wanna bore....but considering the marginal gains, I'd rather just clean up the head, leave it 1199 and spray it right....although you'll lose a good 10 hp or so off spray due to lower compression pistons...oh well.

Actually ship its the most economical option, I have thought about that, for the price of the big bore I could get nos pistons and headwork. Just wonder how it will run off of the gas. I have been running very low gears so should be good. It may be the best option.
Shiph I have been spraying the nos in 2nd with 17-50 gears on stock arm and its fun. I tuned my nos system and got it working very well. It is a bit harder to launch though, I am going to run the eigth on sun and see where Im at. Trying to be in 6.50's by time track closes for season on stock wheelbase.
17-50 does get you a great holeshot though. 15-20 bikelengths on a new r1. with the nos.
What pistons, and where is best place to get them. I was thinking APE, dont know where I want to get the head done though. I will be looking for are cylinder and head bolts to keep the top on. Should be good.

Ship how do you think stock bore with good pistons and hardware would fare on longer distance runs, like bonne or maxton. Would this be enough to hold her all together. Or change valves to some hardcore ones to handle extra heat. I am looking around right now at options to use during the winter.

You have talked with Vince Hill about his setup, right?

I think whenever you look @ a big shot of nitrous (big enough so the OEM bottom end can handle it) You HAVE to look @ your fuel options....ok pump and injectors of course....but the head. A stock 12 head wasn't designed for that....from what I understand valves (especially valve springs) need to be looked @. I'd want the head done right.

Even if it only puts me @ 260 RWHP...(160 + 100 nos) thats a healthy jump! You could get away with a lil more too! Just gotta make sure its done right. @ These levels I'm always willing to give up a few HP for a bit more reliabilty. 275 rwhp would be sweeeeeeeeeeet!

Wonder what that would get me @ Maxton??? I'd probably run the 10 lb bottle like Jim Owen did on his 218 mph zx12...that shit is NUTSO!!!  Keep the psi up till the end so it doesn't taper out @ the traps.

FWIW I think you MUST lower compression @ these levels....so no....I wouldn't run it w/flat pistons, stock compression, 100 shot....

Where does eh keep a ten pound bottle. I was going to run two 2.5s but a ten is nutz. I talked with vhill about his set up. I was thinking of something similar with headwork. Stock bore, polished nos pistons, good studs and bolt hardware, with headwork and custom tuning for nos. 260 hp would be sufficient for me. I think 160 or so at the wheel would be fine with the gearing I am running for the street.
I have been looking for a decent price on headwork but have few options right now. I talked to Lee's in Nc, And ape in cali. I would really like to find someone local who has some experience. I have been looking for a good head to have worked too, so I can keep the stocker. A wet kit with these mods would prob be best, but I like the simplicity of the dry and mine is working well now.
