It followed me home....

Well, actually two of them did. Traded the '02 6r in on a couple of dualsports. We have more miles of gravel logging roads in this area than we do paved roads and these should do a little better than my 12r and my wifes 9r on the gravel.

Had to test fit in the 5th wheel.

A return to my dirt roots after 24 years away. I think I can get in more trouble with one of these than on a streetbike. I already kinda got in trouble for tearing up the footing doing cookies in our horse arena. :D

Funny how alot of us did/are returning to the days of our youth. I can tell ya this much, it comes back fast !!! I returned to the dirt several years ago and it's really cool how the sights, smells and sounds get your blood pumping. One of my fondest and one that was last sensed long ago was the smell of water and mud on a hot engine. For some reason that always brings a smile to my face 8) . That and the sound and smell of a 2 stroker 8) 8) . When I first returned to the whole bike scene with the 12 I was happy. Same year bought a dirtbike and the next spring started doing MX track days and trail rides. It's to the point now that the street rides are really only present to fullfill my need to ride and the dirt rides are truly my passion. Weird how it came around full circle. I thought I was done with the juvenile dirt stuff when I was 20, lol.

Not to mention that when you ARE off-road, the cop factor/ticket worries
all go away... When I'm on the road half my fun factor is lost to the cop
factor worries...

Yep.

I honestly had my mind made up that I was going to get the KLR. Then I saw the KLR and the DR sitting side by side at the dealer. Looking both bikes over, the "visual quality" of the DR made it look much better than the KLR. While the DR looks like a 10 year old style, the KLR looks like 25 year old styling sitting next to it.

So, off to the net to do some research. The KLR's shortcommings are well documented and I knew all of them before researching the DR. The cam tensioner prone to breaking, poor brakes, very weak electrical system and an exhaust system that lasts an average of 5k miles. The DR has had some problems such as a leaking base gasket and a problem with the starter that would crack the cases. BUT, Suzuki actually fixed the known problems, Kawasaki hasn't with the KLR.

List prices had the DR $100 less than the KLR, but the DR doesn't come with a skid plate or rear rack. Adding those as "Suzuki Genuine Accessories" brings the price up $160. The KLR still has the advantage of that huge gas tank, but for around $200, a larger tank can be fitted to the DR. Upgrading the cam chain tensioner and the brakes on the KLR brings the price fairly even.

The DR is lighter, mainly due to air/oil cooling vs the liquid cooling of the KLR, along with better suspension, making it an easier ride off road than the Kawi. We still have the ZX's for the street, so the better off road ability was weighed heavily.

Also, so the height challenged rider (read: my wife ) the DR can be lowered 1.7" by changing a spacer and the mounting hole on the rear shock, and spacers in the forks. A factory 1.5" lower seat is also available for a reasonable price.

For me, the DR was a hands down winner. BUT, if I didn't already have a street bike, I would have still gone with the KLR for its better highway abilities.

I could ride all day at 150+mph on the back roads around here with my 12R... put me on one of those in the dirt ... just call 911 before I even kick start it!

BTW.. Nice bike Miklos 8)
