The shop manual says apply some oil to the friction plates before installing. I've read on this site guys soaking the plates overnight. My question: is it necessary to soak them or is a coating enough.
Soaking overnight seems excessive to me. Whenever I've done a clutch I've just let them soak in oil for a while is all. I've let them soak for an hour or less I'd guess and I've never had a problem with any of my bikes/clutches. I usually just start soaking the new disks when I'm beginning the job, and let them continue to soak until it's time to put them in. I'm not a drag racer or anything, just a guy that's owned and tinkered with a number of bikes.
Doug Meyer told me just wipe a bit on with your fingers and put them in. soaking doesnt help. i havent had any problems with my clutch drag racing using that method
