Bike service

Hello all...I am new to the site and i have a question. I have a 2001 zx12r. I bought the the bike new and have never had a service. no valve adjust, no tune up. just gas and oil changes. I can't find my manual to tell me what is need for 36,000 miles. Can anyone tell me what the manual recomends. I am taking the bike to the shop this week and need to know what too ask them to do or check.

Welcome, 89Ascmclaren!!

I'd agree with hondakiller on the valves & plugs... I'd check the chain/sprockets for wear... Other than that, if you go to a Kawa shop, they'll have some recommendations, I'm sure!!

I assume you know the shop a bit, but if not, be careful they don't sell you "blinker fluid", "muffler bearings", etc..., cuz some shops will do that!!

Prolly not what you were asking, but I thought I'd throw it in...

Actually, other than plugs & valves (which are both a BITCH to do, BTW), the 12 is a practically maintenance-free bike... Congrats on your purchase!!

Yeah..... I need a chain and sprockets, Rear brakes. Oh Yeah...does any one have a two brothers slip-on on their bike? I have the pipe and this is my second clamp that i will be replacing( the one that holds it to the pass foot peg), it always seem to split at the mounting point. I really like this bike. I have the k&n filter on it but it seemed to lose some steam last year. I was reading the plug recommendations, Is there one that will give me better than 36,000miles? This bike is pretty much stock except the filter and the pipe. Any sprocket and chain recommendations ( i would like to keep it gold). Sorry for writing so much, i'm happy i found this site.

I can't help you with the 2bros pipe, but someone here can, I'm sure!!

There are several plugs that you can choose from, but really, I doubt if there's any that will practically give you more than 36,000 miles... That's a lotta miles for a set of plugs, bro!! You may be able to run a set longer, but you'll prolly pay for that extra milage in performance & mileage losses...

Some here will have other recommendations, but an OEM chain is pretty good... BTW - Ron Ayers is prolly the cheapest place to get the OEM stuff, if you didn't know already...

if you need a stock rear sprocket cheap, i have 2. if you want to change your gearing, the usual mod for street driving is changing to a 17 tooth front. get a kawi sprocket as it will have the rubber on it to keep things quiet. i think the bikes that have it stock are the zx11d and the zx14. I like EK chains, but i drag race and need a tough one. i use their ZZZ, 11000 pound tensile strength(way over kill for the street)
try cr9eix plugs

I'd also get them to Sync the throttle bodies and change the brake fluids, might want to think about having the fork fluid changed as well if its been in there for 8 years. Ask them to put a grease gun on the rear suspension linkages as well.

A cheap place to get the cr9eix plugs is Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto . I have a 17 tooth front sprocket and it helps with the early model's light flywheel on city take off. I you want an aluminum rear sprocket i have a new in box Sprocket Specialties 46 tooth(factory tooth count) i need to sell. $40 shipped.

I like to thank everyone for their advice. but I have a few more questions. Is an aluminem sprocket better than stock ( will it wear faster than stock). 2, Do I only need to change the front tooth count, or both. 3 I rode 36,000 miles on the stock clutch, is there a better one? Like I said, the bike has 36,000 miles on all the stock stuff: chains, sprockets, clutch, brakes. So i guess i am looking to upgrade this stuff ( none racing applications) so i can continue to enjoy my ride for maybe another 40,000 miles. Thanks again for all the advice.

aluminum will wear out faster, but is significantly lighter. changing sprockets can be done seperately. changing tooth count is usually done for a purpose. either lower ratio for top end or higher ratio for acceleration. generally guys that just street drive go with 1 down on the front and or 1 up on the rear as you never get to top out the bike in 6th legally anyway. a new chain wouldnt hurt if yours is getting worn, but if taken care of they can last a long time.
stock clutch is just fine for street use. if you start racing then go for aftermarket stuff. check the clutch pack to make sure no steels are warped and the fibers are within spec. you may need to replace fibers. check the break rotors to make sure they arent warped. replace pads if needed, clean the caliper pistons
