how difficult is it to replace the transmission? Does the engine have to come out of the bike?

Yes, you have to take the engine out of the frame. The cases have to be split to remove the transmission. It's not hard at all to do, just time consuming. A shop will propably charge you 80 to 100 an hour...to replace a transmission, would be about 4.5 to 6 hrs....I'm just guessing
