2002 Turbo ZX-12R for sale - Updated to include pics

The time has come to sell the 12 Turbo.

This bike was built and tuned by Muzzy, it isn't a kit.

2002 Kawasaki ZX-12R
Clean title, no lein
14000 miles - Approx 5000 on built motor
Turbonetics T3/T4 Ball bearing turbo with remote wastegate
EFI Race Box ECU (replaces the stock unit)
AMS 1000 Boost controller
Lambda Sensor - Closed loop control
Stock bore with Stroker crankshaft for 1300cc displacement
Muzzy cylinder and stud kit
JE Turbo Pistons
Muzzy exhaust (full system, not a dump pipe)
Muzzy turbo valve spring kit
Muzzy sprocket hub kit
Muzzy steering damper
Muzzy billet basket and clutch kit
Muzzy oil filter relocator
Muzzy electronic shifter (run through EFI)
Muzzy block off plates with crank case breather
Complete RD billet transmission (6 speed)
Shift rod kit
External fuel pump
Hi Point forged aluminum wheels
Pirelli Diablo Rosso tires w/approx 1200 miles
Race Tech Springs and valves front and rear (still have stock springs in a box somewhere)
Stainless brake lines
Greggs customs front turn signals
Clear Alternatives integrated brake light/turn signals
Double bubble wind screen
Corbin Seat and stock seat
Extra set of new in box lower fairings
Mirror block off plates (Stock mirrors included as well)
Stock gearing, wheelbase, and height

This bike was built to function as a streetable turbo, it isn't a normal turbo application with a big hit of horsepower, instead it is exceptionally smooth. I usually only know it is on boost by hearing the turbo or watching the gauges. I have never had it on the drag strip, so I have no idea what it will post for times. I have been unable to make it to any LSR events either. I have had it on a road course once and to Deal's Gap several times with no issues normally related to boost in the corners - except for the obvious rapid acceleration. This bike must really be ridden to fully appreciate it.

PM me to discuss price, or to call for additional information. I will post it here for a while and give the members of the board the first crack at it. If nobody is interrested, off to eBay.

I doubt it qualifies it as a sleeper, but it's awesome that you still have the stock turn signals and mudflap on. Seriously. Beautiful bike!

Thank you!

These pics are a bit old, I put on Greggs Customs front turn signals and a Clear Alternatives integrated tail light. Most people have no idea the bike has a turbo they hear it spool and I run off toward the horizon ;)

Thanks for the bump ZX12DAK

That is EXACTLY what I thought would happen to me when I bought it!

I was wrong (obviously)...the power delivery is deceptively smooth. I only know I am on boost by looking at the gauges, and regularly go from 3000 to 8000+ RPM in a sweeper with no crazy behavior from the rear tire at all. It just goes fast.

Riding this thing made me actually say something to the effect of "this should be illegal"...then the inner hooligan resumed control and I just went faster >:)

I run it on 92/93 Octane and 5lbs boost for 275HP. Running C16 it will handle more boost, but I have never done so.

Nope, it didn't sell yet.

I am still working with a couple guys who are sorting out their financing.

$20,000 is a lot for a bike. I am selling it to build another bike and am figured it will take a while to sell.

It will be on eBay in a few days again.

yup, asking 20k.

It is indeed a lot for a motorcycle, but the cost to build this is even more. I talked to a few folks knowledgeable in this world, and they agreed that is a reasonable price for what it is.

That said, it is a lot of money.

I will listen to offers, but am selling it to build another toy, so it won't be given away. I have all winter to try to sell it before I need another bike ;-)

As Kawasabi points out, it isn't a kit.

To do that, you would need the turbo, exhaust, frame, motor, electronics...pretty much everything but the wheels, plastics, and suspension.

maybe not the turn signals ;)

Parting the bike out isn't a realistic option considering what it takes to put a turbo on a zx12.

TKS for the Info. How much does it generally cost to have a Turbo Kit installed??

i might be intruding into yr sales thread, but well, this might be good info for those who's keen on yr sale, cos it'd let others know the justification of your asking price!

:D

Cheers!

I have no idea what it costs for installation of a turbo kit. Muzzy sells a stage 1 kit for the zx14 (very different setup) and it costs $5k. The stage 2 kit costs $8370 with all the necessary parts listed on their site, additional power commander modules must then be purchased as well. This is just for the parts, no labor. Someone who does this for a living can perhaps voice an opinion as to the number of hours to install. With the work done to my bike, the list starts with "completely disassemble the bike" and then tear into the motor and transmission as well. Once everything was bolted back together, hours and hours were spent on the dyno with the control system. The ECU is not stock, therefore everything had to be configured and mapped.

Screen Cap of Programming Software

The modifications done to my bike are quite a bit more extensive than either of the listed kits as well. The wheels, suspension, transmission, clutch, and many other modifications have been made. I was told the original cost to build was more than what I am asking for the entire package, and I have added a few things since I acquiring this bike. All the drive train, programming, and most of the other work was done by Muzzy's. The suspension and some other modifications were done by a licensed Kawasaki shop. (I don't trust myself to do much more than change oil)

If this was a simple bolt on turbo kit I would not be asking this kind of money for the bike. A lot has gone into making this bike run as well on the street as it does on the open road. Because of this, there is no monster hit of horse power as there is in a stage 1 or 2 kit. It acts almost as if it is OEM equipment. The power is that linear. And I only run it at 5lbs of boost. This bike has a lot more potential than I will ever use. With the control systems in place, it is useable power too. It might not beat some of the turbo busas on the dyno, but it will absolutely destroy them on the road.

The potential of this bike is enormous. 275 rear wheel HP on pump gas in street mode. It doesn't over heat, runs smooth, idles properly, and has linear power. Step up to C16 and more boost and go land speed racing. Stretch and lower it and go drag racing. I only ever use it on low boost and don't race it, so I retained stock height and length.

If this bike doesn't sell, I'll keep it and run it as a track bike next year. The only reason I am selling is to purchase a purpose built track bike. My RC51 isn't fast enough...apparently I have become accustomed to the monsterous power of the turbo 12.

I hope this adds some information and answers some questions. I chose the $20k as that is what was recommended as a starting price by people who build these types of machines fora living. I know this is a LOT of money for a bike with a current blue book value of $5800. To most people, it won't be worth it. To someone who knows what it takes to build something like this, it is worth much more. I am open to offers, but as I said before, I know the value of the bike and have a number in mind I will not go below.

Adam

I heard some advice I thought made some sense: Don't build up a car or bike, buy one that's already been built. You barely get back 1/3 of what you put in...if that.

If I could afford it I would snap this up in a sec, I love sleepers. Ya ya I know, Zx12r and sleeper dont go in the same sentence but you know what I mean. LOL

Beautiful bike, I'm sure it hauls some serious tail!

Definately not a bad deal when you consider what it takes to build a project such as this one. Should make for a hellava streetbike.

Best of luck finding it a new home!

now THAT i find funny!

the thought of it scared me a bit when i bought it...now i am used to it...

that scares me ;)

my hope is that someone in the LSR (or other racing) world will buy it, as that is what it was built for. so far, no luck.

It would be fun to see what we could get out of a turbocharged 12R..... but first thing first, my soon-to-be Nitrous-Injected 1287.

I designed a pretty trick progressive wet system using the best parts from all different brands, looking for 220+mph at Maxton next year on a little juice. It's all sitting in a box, just waiting for some free time to start setting it up for testing/tuning.

trying to beat Sals big motor busa eh? is it top secret or are you willing to share the details of your setup? I may be putting a progressive controller on my bike next yr, but i have to do some reading about them first. im not really a fan of pulsing the solenoids so i may stick with 2 stages for an el cheapo way to be kinda progressive lol
having a properly setup turbo would be so nice though... no bottles to fill, no worrying about pressure... someday ill have one....

Not sure if it will go faster than the Ace 1507 Busa... probably won't if I had to guess. Even if it did, it's still Nitrous vs N/A which is apples to oranges. Sal's looking to put that Busa at 223-225mph next year N/A at Maxton. Either way, we don't compete against each other, we are a team.

We both have our specific goals/targets for the 12R and Busa and that's what we focus on.

Details on set-up and exact parts are held close to the chest, as always. I will say this though.... it ran me about $1,500 in parts to make the entire "kit". We're working with some pretty trick stuff, I can't wait to start playing with it!

ahh nothing wrong with friendly rivalry within a team. competition makes us sharpen our skills even more :)
my nitrous setup is very basic, but very effective for what i want it to do. i have pics on bikeland if you havent seen them. I would love to have it tuned as well as Sal can, but ill keep expirementing with my datalogger untill its about as good as i can get and still stay safe. its a great learing expirience. someday ill build a turbo like Adams... that thing would fly down the 1/4. it just needs the basic stuff, lock up, shock, 12 over arm.... theres no need to ever touch the motor except to freshen it after you raced the snot out of it for a couple seasons on the high boost setting....
